JOSEPH WHEELER SEWELL
I find it a bit amazing that many MLBaseball players get paid $15, 20, 30, 40 and even one is getting 70 MILLION DOLLARS a year for as many as ten years (a couple for eleven or twelve years). They may hit for a high average and hit 40, 50 or 60 home runs, AND YET strike out 100 to 200 times a year. Some earn their money because they are also good fielders and excellent team leaders.
There once was a baseball player named Joseph Wheeler Sewell. He was a fourteen year shortstop/third baseman who played eleven years for the Cleveland Indians and the final three for the New York Yankees.
Joe didn’t hit many home runs – only 49 of them – but that was during the dead ball era which lasted into the 1930’s. Joe did however, during 1,903 games and 7,130 at bats, get 2,226 hits which is still a very high accomplishment. He also drove in 1,055 run which very respectable. For this his salary was in the low ten thousand dollar bracket which he earned during his later years….amazing how inflation has spread in just less than one hundred years.
Hats of to ya’, Joe, and RIP (1898 to 1990). Amen!
